I teamed up with Sport Unlimited this month to showcase a few of their winter coats. I am an avid believer in “The” winter coat and think every woman should own that one statement coat that can turn any outfit into looking like a million bucks. I won’t lie shooting this look with Tegan made me feel very fancy… You fancy huh?
When I first saw this coat I knew exactly the look I wanted to create and how to achieve this. All I had to do was envision myself sitting on THE famous stairs with Blair Waldorf sipping on a chai latte while gossiping. I was and still am obsessed with Gossip Girl, who wasn’t right? And that was my inspiration for this look post. If I had to relate myself to any of the characters it would have to be Jenny Humphrey (Pre-Adolescent phase of course) maybe it’s the white blonde hair or maybe it’s just her feisty attitude. I wish my day job required me to dress up every day, I am a sucker for dressing up and I’m always trying to find an excuse to. I even go as far as trying to convince my friends to have a dress up for their birthdays. I never get it right, which is why I had so much fun styling this look and couldn’t wait for shoot day.
If you can walk around the entire day with your coat around your shoulders you have accomplished a lot. I used this RVCA coat as my outfit’s accessory. Keeping this look pretty simple I paired a little black dress with thigh high boots. I wanted this coat to be the statement piece, so adding anything else to this look would have been too overpowering. I still want to look and feel sexy in winter and I know most of the time this can be a mission due to the icy weather we have been experiencing lately. However, wearing thigh high boots are the perfect shoe with all round versatility. Keeping you warm while still being able to look and feel gorgeous.
A note to all my curvy ladies:
How to wear chunky coats: With a thick fluffy coat like this one and others such as faux fur, they have the tendency to make you look bigger than you actually are. Which is exactly why I will always recommend wearing such coats over your shoulders or otherwise try and keep the bottom half of your outfit as tight fitting as possible in order to create a slimming structured silhouette. Keeping your waist signed in and on display will always play in your favour.
Finding the right thigh high boots for your shape and size: To be entirely honest, I got lucky with these boots. I have always struggled to find boots that actually fit and zip up over my calves. This has been a 5-year struggle. When I saw these boots at Cotton On, I decided to take them into the changing room to avoid the embarrassment of trying them on in the store. To my surprise, the boots not only fitted but they looked amazing on my legs. I couldn’t wait to tell all my curvy ladies about this purchase, as I wanted everyone else to share this same excitement with me. I guess the only advice I can share with you is to JUST try them on, you’ll be surprised. And when you do find a pair that fits, it’s worth it in the end to spend the money.
